Master the 3-tone pitch system

Igbo is a tonal language. Tone is phonemic, meaning pitch differences change the actual meaning of words with identical spelling. In the system below, click the concepts to listen to pitch profiles, or sound out custom word tones visually.

Understand the Pitch Levels

Every syllable carries a tone. Practice identifying these patterns:

High Tone (◌́)

Pronounced with a high vocal pitch. (Example: A in Akpa)

🔊
Low Tone (◌̀)

Pronounced with a dropped vocal pitch. (Example: wu in Ewu)

🔊
Downstep Tone (◌̄)

A high pitch dropped slightly, but not as low as a Low Tone.
